Heidi McCollum has served in the Fifth Judicial District (DA5) since 2013, most recently becoming its first elected woman as District Attorney (Jan 2021). During her tenure, McCollum has prosecuted cases ranging from misdemeanors and traffic offenses to a recent attempted murder case where the defendant received a life+ sentence. In addition, she has handled cases involving sex assaults, armed robbery, kidnapping, organized crime, and complex financial matters.
Strong relationships between the District Attorney and local law enforcement agencies in the District’s four counties are crucial, and are the hallmark of her commitment to our many mountain communities. This includes gaining the trust and respect of the defense bar, multiple community organizations, and the residents of Eagle, Summit, Lake and Clear Creek Counties.
From her nearly 10 years with DA5, DA McCollum has served on numerous committees, including Child Fatality Prevention Review Committees in Eagle, Lake and Summit Counties; the Town of Eagle PPSAC (Police Public Safety Advisory Committee); the Immigrant Advisory Committee; and, as a P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) instructor for the Eagle County Reserve Officers’ Academy.
Passionately committed to obtaining justice for crime victims, DA McCollum is constantly aware of the rights and protections afforded to those who have been charged with crimes, giving her a unique perspective among prosecutors in Colorado.
She is a Colorado Native, who grew up in Eagle. She graduated from Mesa State College, and attended law school at Chapman University in Orange County, Calif. McCollum brings a diverse knowledge of the legal field to her role as the District Attorney, working as an intern at the Eagle County District Attorney’s Office (1999); from private practice for nine years; and as the Assistant District Attorney with JD5 since 2013. Here, she managed the day-to-day operations of JD5, including policy development and budgets for each office. This included maintaining a consistent caseload of juvenile matters, as well as high-profile cases throughout the District.
